A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, has formally declared her intention to contest the party’s governorship ticket in the 2027 elections, presenting her aspiration as a stabilising option ahead of what she described as a potentially delicate political cycle.
In a detailed open letter dated February 26, 2026, and addressed to party leaders and stakeholders, Sarafa-Yusuf said her decision followed months of reflection and consultations across the state. She argued that Ogun State faces a test of how well it manages growth, equity, and continuity as it prepares for leadership transition.
“Our generation is being tested by how well we manage growth, equity and continuity,” she wrote, noting that expansion without balanced development and institutional stability could create long-term risks.
Sarafa-Yusuf, who contested the APC governorship ticket in 2022 but did not emerge as the party’s candidate, said she accepted the outcome of that process without destabilising party structures. According to her, the experience clarified the importance of competing within defined boundaries while preserving cohesion.
Addressing ongoing zoning conversations and agitation from Ogun West, she acknowledged that regional grievances should not be dismissed but cautioned against escalation. She called for inclusion and balance in managing succession discussions to prevent political instability.
She also affirmed that her relationship with Governor Dapo Abiodun remains cordial, stressing that her ambition is not intended to undermine existing leadership but to protect continuity while improving governance outcomes.

ADVERTISE WITH USOn gender representation, Sarafa-Yusuf noted that Nigeria has yet to elect a female governor, describing her aspiration as symbolically significant. However, she emphasised that competence and institutional understanding — not symbolism — remain central to her bid.
Outlining her governance priorities, she highlighted the need to consolidate Ogun’s industrial advantage, empower young people, modernise infrastructure, deepen investor confidence, and strengthen trust between government and citizens.
She said that if elected, she would pursue consultative but disciplined governance, stressing that institutions would be respected and power exercised with restraint. Sarafa-Yusuf pointed to her background in public administration and journalism as part of the experience she believes equips her for executive leadership.
The APC chieftain added that she would continue consultations within party structures in the coming weeks and expressed hope for an orderly, credible and unifying primary process.
Her declaration signals the early shaping of succession politics within the Ogun APC, as stakeholders begin weighing continuity, zoning dynamics and party cohesion ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
