Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a former Senator for Ogun Central, has officially entered the race for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, pledging to bring new leadership and renewed focus to the state’s political landscape.
Obasanjo, who completed her All Progressives Congress (APC) membership registration in Ibogun Ward, Ifo Local Government Area, reiterated her intention to contest the governorship seat in next year’s polls.
The former senator who represented Ogun Central from 2007 to 2011, formally signalled her ambitions amid ongoing political realignment ahead of the general elections.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, Obasanjo emphasised her optimism about recent economic developments and national infrastructure projects, including currency stability and major road initiatives, which she said could generate broader opportunities for Ogun State.

ADVERTISE WITH US“Stabilisation of the naira is a big one,” she told reporters, pointing to a steadier exchange rate as a key factor that would enable businesses to plan effectively and strengthen economic confidence across the country.
“Although there was a lot of negativity around the coastal road, that will generate income in terms of connectivity of the two ports… it will also ease transportation to the East in ways that we can’t even start to reckon with.”
Obasanjo’s entry into the governorship race has already sparked reactions from political actors in the state.
A chieftain of the Ogun APC, Akeem Akilo, recently criticised Obasanjo’s remarks about Senator Olamilekan Adeola, a leading figure in the party, calling her comments “misplaced and unfortunate.”
Akilo argued that branding Adeola an “opportunist” disregarded his long-standing political career and connection to the state’s electorate.
The former senator’s governorship bid comes as political interest in Ogun State intensifies with the 2027 general elections approaching.
With her national profile, shaped in part by her tenure in the Senate and her family’s political legacy, Obasanjo’s campaign is expected to be a focal point of political debate in the state.
