The newly sworn-in Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Pastor Peter Akpe, has stated that he did not campaign or lobby for the position following the passing of his predecessor.
Akpe described his appointment as an opportunity to serve and support others rather than pursue personal recognition.
He made the remarks during a reception held at the Government House in Yenagoa.
Akpe said, “But let me make it clear that I have not gone to lobby for any position, including this one. Most of the influential Bayelsa (big) men are here.

Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the immediate predecessor to Pastor Peter Akpe as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, served in the position from February 14, 2020, until his sudden death on December 11, 2025.
Ewhrudjakpo, a seasoned politician and lawyer, was elected alongside Governor Douye Diri and re‑elected in 2023. He collapsed while on official duty and was pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, at the age of 60.
His unexpected passing created a vacancy that was later filled by Akpe through nomination by Governor Diri and confirmation by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. Rejoice Ewodage
