The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to education, describing it as one of the strongest pillars of the Tinubu administration.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, made the statement on Friday when the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) paid a courtesy visit to the State House in Abuja.
Gbajabiamila urged student leaders to support government investment in education by intensifying advocacy against social vices on campuses, including drug abuse, cultism, and prostitution.
He emphasized that universities and colleges are not only centers for academic learning but also for character development.
He highlighted that President Tinubu considers the fight against social vices a national priority, noting that a special committee has been established to address growing concerns in secondary and tertiary institutions.
“Education is one of the pillars of this administration. We believe in the youths—the students, your energy and capacity—and we don’t pay lip service to matters like this,” Gbajabiamila said. “I charge you to make speaking morality to your peers part of your curriculum.”

He also highlighted that sustained dialogue with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has helped maintain stability in the university system, bringing Nigeria close to three years without a nationwide strike.
Reflecting on his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Gbajabiamila recalled negotiating with ASUU during previous strikes that had forced students to spend extra years in school.
He further noted that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund is already helping many indigent students remain in school.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Sunday Asefon, echoed the administration’s commitment to ongoing dialogue with students and improving stability in education.
He observed that recent interventions by the Tinubu administration are helping restore predictable academic calendars, which had been disrupted by past disputes with ASUU.
NANS President Comrade Olushola Oladoja commended the administration for what he called “unprecedented support for Nigerian students”, citing improved engagement with ASUU and the implementation of the student loan scheme, which has benefitted over 900,000 students.
Oladoja also highlighted campus security interventions, including approval for perimeter fencing at vulnerable institutions, and pledged NANS’ continued support for government policies and conflict-resolution frameworks.
He further requested an audience with the President, sought student palliatives for the fasting season, and appealed for increased job opportunities for young graduates.
The student leader revealed plans to hold a major student gathering in Abuja to publicly endorse President Tinubu’s policies and promised that the association would continue to promote peace and constructive dialogue across Nigerian campuses.
