The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a 26-year-old man suspected of orchestrating the recent attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benin, Edo State.
Obi, alongside former Edo State Governor Chief John Oyegun and several leaders of the opposition All Democratic Congress (ADC), narrowly escaped harm on February 24 when gunmen opened fire during a party meeting in the state capital.
Following the incident, Udeme Monday Stephen, a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Rivers State, took to X (@stevetom788) to claim responsibility and threaten further attacks.
“We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he survived this one… I learnt he’s going to my Rivers State… Na my men go handle that one and dem no dey miss target… Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die,” Stephen posted online.
A security source disclosed that DSS operatives immediately launched a covert investigation using forensic analysis to track and arrest the suspect. “I strongly believe that the outcome of the agency’s forensic investigations implicated the suspect,” the source said.

“You know that, as a responsible security organisation saddled with the task of counter-espionage, VIP protection, among other asset protection duties, the DSS is always alive to its responsibility of investigating credible intelligence, irrespective of tribe or religion,” the source added. “They swiftly deployed operatives, and the man who threatened Peter Obi was nabbed and is in custody.”
The arrest follows a violent political incident in Benin City, Edo State, where gunfire reportedly erupted during activities linked to the formal defection of former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Armed individuals allegedly trailed the group — including Peter Obi and other party leaders — from the ADC secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie‑Oyegun and opened fire near the gate, damaging vehicles in what supporters described as a failed assassination attempt.
The ADC and its National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, condemned the incident, saying it posed a “grave and disturbing” threat to democratic participation and calling for greater security protections for political actors.
Although no fatalities were reported, footage circulating online showed bullet holes and property damage at the scene, raising alarm among political observers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Police authorities have confirmed investigations into the attack are ongoing, even as rival political groups traded accusations over responsibility.
